Fonts look wrong

When text shows in the wrong typeface, on the stage or on air, and what to check before a font leaves your facility.

How fonts work in a document

When you pick a typeface in a text's Font row, the editor puts the font file into the document. From then on the document carries it: it opens and plays the same on a colleague's machine and on the playout server, whether or not the font is installed there. The fonts a document carries are listed in the Assets panel.

The text shows in the wrong typeface on air

CheckDo this
Preflight says No font is embedded for this textPick the typeface again in the text's Font row, so the document carries it
The font was picked on another machine and replaced thereOpen the font in the Assets panel: Used by says which texts use it. Replace… puts the right file in
The weight is wrong: regular where you set boldThe font has no bold face of its own. Import the bold file with the button beside Font, or choose a variable font and set Weight
It is right in the editor, wrong in another playerThat player may not support something the text uses. Test in airZ Engine, which plays what the editor shows

Characters show as boxes or are missing

The typeface has no drawing for those characters: accented letters in a display face, Arabic or Cyrillic in a Latin-only font, emoji anywhere.

  • Choose a typeface that covers the language the data will arrive in.
  • Test with real data. Type names from the actual rundown, with their accents, into the Data panel.
  • For a mix of scripts, use a second style in the text's Runs and styles with a font that covers the other script. See Text.

The font picker has no preview for a font

Fonts larger than 12 MB — big CJK collections — are listed without a preview, to keep the picker quick. They work as normal once picked.

A font I installed does not appear

The editor lists the machine's fonts when it starts. Close and reopen it after installing a font, or import the font file directly with the button beside Font in the text inspector.

Before a document leaves your facility

A document carries its fonts, so sending the document sends the fonts.

  • Check each typeface's licence allows it to go where the document is going: a colleague, another facility, a playout server.
  • The template card and preflight name a commercial typeface when they find one.
  • A font that must not travel: replace it, in the Assets panel, with one whose licence allows it.

See Licensing.
