Where your files live
What airZ Editor keeps, and where — so you know what to back up, what to send, and what to carry to another computer.
Your work
| File | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
<name>.airz | A document: everything you design, animate and bind, with its fonts, pictures and scripts inside it | Wherever you save it |
<name>.airzversions | The versions you keep of that document: the last 40 unnamed ones, and every one you named | A folder beside the document |
<name>.riv | What Export .riv writes: the graphic, ready for the playout server | Wherever you export it |
| PNG pictures | A frame, or a sequence of frames, exported from File | Wherever you export them |
A document carries what it needs, so one .airz file is enough to send a graphic to a colleague. Send the .airzversions folder with it only if they should have its history too.
The versions window can also keep a backup copy of each version in a second folder you choose — a network share, another disk — so a lost machine does not take the history with it.
Your settings
Everything that is yours rather than a document's is kept in your Windows profile, in a folder called airZ Editor. To open it, type %APPDATA%\airZ Editor into the address bar of a File Explorer window.
| In that folder | What it holds |
|---|---|
ui.json | How your panels are arranged, your keyboard shortcuts, the controllers you have paired and when each document was last sent where, and your other preferences |
recent.json | The Recent list on the Start screen |
scripts | Your shelf in the script library |
templates | Templates downloaded from the template library |
recovery | The snapshot kept while you work (see below) |
The assistant's key, when you give it one, is kept in the Windows credential store, not in a file.
The licence belongs to the machine, not to you, so it is kept for every Windows user, in %ProgramData%irZ Editor\license. It does not move with your settings: a new computer needs a licence of its own.
Moving to another computer
With airZ Editor closed on both computers, copy the airZ Editor folder from your profile to the same place on the new computer, and your shortcuts, shelf, panels and paired controllers come with you. (A running editor keeps writing its settings, so a copy taken while it is open can be out of date.) Templates will download again on their own if you leave templates behind.
If the editor closes unexpectedly
While a document keeps changing, the editor takes a snapshot of it every minute into recovery. Saving the document, or closing the editor normally, removes the snapshot — so anything still there when the editor starts is work that never reached the disk, and the editor offers it back: Recover unsaved work? See Prompts and notices and Recovering a document.
